docker-osx-dev - A productive development environment with Docker on OS X

As of March 4, 2018, this project is no longer actively maintained. The Docker for Mac app has made significant improvements in terms of mounted volume performance and file watching, so docker-osx-dev is no longer necessary. I tried many different solutions (see Alternatives) that didn't work until I finally stumbled across one that does: rsync. With rsync, build and compilation performance in mounted folders is on par with native OS X performance and standard file watching mechanisms work properly too. However, setting it up correctly is a painful process that involves many steps, so to make life easier, I've packaged this process up in this docker-osx-dev project.

Longshoreman automates application deployment using Docker. Just create a Docker repository (or use a service), configure the cluster using AWS or Digital Ocean (or whatever you like) and deploy applications using a Heroku-like CLI tool.We created Longshoreman because we love using Docker but were frustrated with the lack of production-ready deployment options that were available at the time. We looked closely at Deis, Flynn, Dokku and others, but they either did not meet our requirements or were explicitly marked as not ready for production. We were extremely impressed by Deis in particular and its use of bleeding edge technologies like CoreOS, etcd and systemd. The biggest shortcoming we found with Deis is that it rebuilds Dockerfiles from scratch for each deploy (as far as I know).

ansible-coreos-bootstrap - [NOT MAINTAINED] bootstrap a coreos machine for control via ansible

In order to effectively run ansible, the target machine needs to have a python interpreter. Coreos machines are minimal and do not ship with any version of python. To get around this limitation we can install pypy, a lightweight python interpreter. The coreos-bootstrap role will install pypy for us and we will update our inventory file to use the installed python interpreter. Unlike a typical role, you need to configure Ansible to use an alternative python interpreter for coreos hosts. This can be done by adding a coreos group to your inventory file and setting the group's vars to use the new python interpreter. This way, you can use ansible to manage CoreOS and non-CoreOS hosts. Simply put every host that has CoreOS into the coreos inventory group and it will automatically use the specified python interpreter.
