firecracker - Secure and fast microVMs for serverless computing.

  •    Rust

Our mission is to enable secure, multi-tenant, minimal-overhead execution of container and function workloads. Read more about the Firecracker Charter here.

runtime - OCI (Open Containers Initiative) compatible runtime using Virtual Machines

  •    Go

cc-runtime is the next generation of Intel® Clear Containers runtime. This tool, henceforth referred to simply as "the runtime", builds upon the virtcontainers project to provide a high-performance standards-compliant runtime that creates hardware-virtualized containers which leverage Intel's VT-x technology.

firecracker-containerd - firecracker-containerd enables containerd to manage containers as Firecracker microVMs

  •    Go

This repository enables the use of a container runtime, containerd, to manage Firecracker microVMs. Like traditional containers, Firecracker microVMs offer fast start-up and shut-down and minimal overhead. Unlike traditional containers, however, they can provide an additional layer of isolation via the KVM hypervisor. To maintain compatibility with the container ecosystem, where possible, we use container standards such as the OCI image format.

vic - Integrated containers engine on vSphere

  •    Go

vSphere Integrated Containers Engine (VIC Engine) is a container runtime for vSphere, allowing developers familiar with Docker to develop in containers and deploy them alongside traditional VM-based workloads on vSphere clusters, and allowing for these workloads to be managed through the vSphere UI in a way familiar to existing vSphere admins.See VIC Engine Architecture for a high level overview.

addon-lxdone - Allows OpenNebula to manage Linux Containers via LXD

  •    Python

LXDoNe is an addon for OpenNebula to manage LXD Containers. It fits in the Virtualization and Monitorization Driver section according to OpenNebula's Architecture. It uses the pylxd API for several container tasks. This addon is the continuation of LXCoNe, an addon for LXC. Check the blog entry in OpenNebula official site. LXD is a daemon which provides a REST API to drive LXC containers. Containers are lightweight OS-level Virtualization instances, they behave like Virtual Machines but don't suffer from hardware emulation processing penalties by sharing the kernel with the host. They run bare-metal-like, simple containers can boot up in 2 seconds consuming less than 32MB of RAM and a minimal fraction of a CPU Core. Check out this performance comparison against KVM if you don't know much about LXD.
