rip - A safe and ergonomic alternative to rm

  •    Rust

rip is a command-line deletion tool focused on safety, ergonomics, and performance. It favors a simple interface, and does not implement the xdg-trash spec or attempt to achieve the same goals. Deleted files get sent to the graveyard (/tmp/graveyard-$USER by default, see notes on changing this) under their absolute path, giving you a chance to recover them. No data is overwritten. If files that share the same path are deleted, they will be renamed as numbered backups.

trashnet - Dataset of images of trash; Torch-based CNN for garbage image classification

  •    Lua

Code (only for the convolutional neural network) and dataset for mine and Mindy Yang's final project for Stanford's CS 229: Machine Learning class. Our paper can be found here. The convolutional neural network results on the poster are dated since we continued working after the end of the quarter and were able to achieve around 75% test accuracy (with 70/13/17 train/val/test split) after changing the weight initialization to the Kaiming method. The pictures were taken by placing the object on a white posterboard and using sunlight and/or room lighting. The pictures have been resized down to 512 x 384, which can be changed in data/constants.py (resizing them involves going through step 1 in usage). The devices used were Apple iPhone 7 Plus, Apple iPhone 5S, and Apple iPhone SE.

  •    Emacs

Make delete-by-moving-to-trash do what you expect it to do on OS X. For whatever reason GNU Emacs doesn’t support the system trash can on OS X. Instead it’ll move files into the freedesktop.org trash can, which is, uhm, not particularly useful behaviour on OS X.

gomi - Trash can in CLI

  •    Go

Then, it's this gomi. Unlike rm command, it is possible to easily restore deleted files because gomi have the trashcan for the CLI. It is also possible to work with trashcan for Graphical user interface (GUI). *1 gomi means a trash in Japanese.
