btrfs snapshotting and backup system offering snapshot measurement, transport and pruning. snazzer offers a way to generate reproducible measurements for snapshots under its management. These measurements are reports generated by snazzer-measure and they include du -bs, sha512sum and gpg2 signatures. These measurements may be performed on the original host, or any other machines receiving and handling snapshots along the way (Eg. via snazzer-receive). snazzer appends the output of snazzer-measure to text files in .snapshotz/.measurements with the same names as the snapshots they have measured under .snapshotz, so for example a snapshot at /mnt/home/.snapshotz/2015-04-16T115421+1000 will have measurement results appended to /mnt/home/.snapshotz/.measurements/2015-04-16T115421+1000.

Backups are good for you. Most people learn this the hard way (including me). Nowadays my Linux laptop automatically creates a full system snapshot every four hours by pushing changed files to an rsync daemon running on the server in my home network and creating a snapshot afterwards using the cp -al command (the article Easy Automated Snapshot-Style Backups with Linux and Rsync explains the basic technique). The server has a second disk attached which asynchronously copies from the main disk so that a single disk failure doesn't wipe all of my backups (the "time delayed replication" aspect has also proven to be very useful). Okay, cool, now I have backups of everything, up to date and going back in time! But I'm running through disk space like crazy... A proper deduplicating filesystem would be awesome but I'm running crappy consumer grade hardware and e.g. ZFS has not been a good experience in the past. So I'm going to have to delete backups...


python-rsync-system-backup - Linux system backups powered by rsync

The rsync-system-backup program uses rsync to create full system backups of Linux systems. Supported backup destinations include local disks (possibly encrypted using LUKS) and remote systems that are running an SSH server or rsync daemon. Each backup produces a timestamped snapshot and these snapshots are rotated according to a rotation scheme that you can configure. The package is currently tested on cPython 2.6, 2.7, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and PyPy (2.7). While this project brings together more than ten years of experience in creating (system) backups using rsync, all of the actual Python code was written in the first few months of 2017 and hasn't seen much real world use.
