Microsoft acquires GitHub. Is it Good or Bad?

We aggregate and tag open source projects. We have collections of more than one million projects. Check out the projects section.

Microsoft announced that it is acquiring GitHub for 7.5 Billion dollars. GitHub is a most used Software developer and Code hosting platform. It hosts more than 80 million code repository and more than 20 million developers collaborate in GitHub. In addition to managing code repositories, GitHub has developed many tools to increase the productivity of developers. Almost 70% of open source projects hosted in GitHub. Microsoft is a big corporate leader and it buying a open source code hosting company, Is it good or bad?

GitHub has a marketplace where third party application vendor can sell their services which can be integrated with GitHub. GitHub also hosts private source code repository. Lot of startups are dependent on this service.

Microsoft loves Open Source. That’s what Microsoft claims these days. They have contributed many projects to open source. They have almost 1800 repositories and 4000 developers contributing to it. Among that most popular are VSCode, DotNet, TypeScript, ChakraCore, Napajs, Windows File Manager, Powershell, Cognitive Toolkit (CNK). Microsoft loves Linux, Android, Java. They contribute in areas like Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, Javascript, Web development, Cross platform application development.

Microsoft is losing its share in Windows but wants to move in areas like Cloud, IoT, Mobile and Open Source related technologies. In recent years, open source products leads to innovation. It is a sensible decision to buy GitHub. GitHub valuation was 2 Billion dollor in 2015 but Microsoft pays 7.5 Billion dollar to acquire it. GitHub preferred to get sold rather than going public.

Is it good or bad for open source community?

Few claim that, GitHub hosts both private and public code and there are chances that Microsoft can access their code. Code is the intellectual property for the technological company and the companies fear there may intrusion of privacy. In our opinion, no need to rush and take decision to move away from GitHub. If you are a competitor to Microsoft then you can think of moving out of GitHub others can happily stay.
